When our text is coherent, accurate and engaging our customers, business partners and the wider communities we serve, will feel respected, engaged and motivated to work with us.

Participants will bring to the course a current work document. They will be led through a series of hands on, practical tasks designed to build skill and confidence with the writing process. Participants will apply what they learn to their own documents during the course.

After the course we can provide follow-up reviews of participants’ completed work documents.

  • Write for readers – how to identify target audience need and meet expectations
  • Measure twice, cut once – how to research, plan and seek clear direction before writing for efficient time management
  • Sentence structure basics – how to write grammatically correct, successful sentences every time
  • Punctuation matters – why paying attention to the small stuff matters – refreshing the basics
  • Style and tone – genre theory and language coding basics, which tone and style works best across which range of text formats
  • Complexity to simplicity – how to master the challenge of communicating technical, specialist information for non-specialists
  • Precision and concision – how to create a sense of urgency and dynamism to motivate and engage your readers
  • Cohesion and logic – how to build sentences into paragraphs and paragraphs into whole documents without losing coherence

Half day workshops: $150 – $200 (incl gst) per person
Full day workshops: $ 300 – $450 (incl gst) per person

Report Writing

Successful reports move projects forward, meet organizational goals and enable decision makers to make sound decisions. Yet too often our precious reports end up on the editing merry-go round. Poor commissioning coupled with a failure to meet reader need, ends up wasting time and company resources.

This course can run for 1.5 – 2 days or a series of half days. We’ll assess individual documents before and after the workshop and adapt the course to suit your organization’s specific needs.

Participants will bring their reports, past and present, to the course. They will be led through a series of hands on, practical tasks designed to build skill and confidence with the report writing process. Participants will apply what they learn to their own reports during the course.

  • What’s in? What’s out? – how to organize your information and the level of detail to meet audience need and expectations
  • What do readers do? – understand key reader behaviours and use this knowledge to support readers through your document
  • The secret’s in the sentence – how to build accurate, reader friendly sentences every time
  • Punctuation matters – why paying attention to the small stuff matters – refreshing the basics
  • Complexity to simplicity – how to communicate specialist information for non-specialists
  • Precision and concision – how to create a sense of urgency and dynamism to motivate and engage your readers
  • Cohesion, logic and layout – how to make layout and formatting enhance your message
  • Summing it up – how to build a clear, concise, coherent executive summary

  • Structure for success – how to structure your body text for quick, accurate, trouble free reading
  • Style dos and don’ts – current business writing trends and what’s accepted as best practice
